When hiring a contractor, the most important traits that homeowners are looking for are trustworthiness and experience. But it can be difficult to ascertain either of these traits from a single interview. However, looking for professional and prestigious designations like the Master Certified Remodeler status from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) can be extremely helpful for homeowners who are in the process of interviewing and hiring contractors for their project.
What Makes MCR Certification So Rare?
According to the NARI website, “The Master Certified Remodeler (MCR) and Master Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler (MCKBR) represent the highest and most prestigious level of certification NARI offers in recognition of those professionals who have made valuable contributions for the betterment of the industry and have withstood the test of time with continued success in business.” The MCR certification measures skill and expertise valued by other professionals in the field, as well as their clients.
Currently, there are only 3 individuals in the state of Arizona, and 106 in the entire U.S. who hold this title. It is highly respected by those who have achieved the designation and who have also undergone the comprehensive review and testing in the areas of business management, ethical conduct, and technical skills. In order to obtain this high rank, professionals are assessed in over 20 remodeling task areas including business methods and practices, building codes and construction law, planning and building site layout, and all trade skills required in remodeling your home. Additionally, they need to have previously attained the Certified Remodeler (CR) designation and maintained it for a minimum of 10 consecutive years. Furthermore, they need to have served in a NARI chapter or a community leadership position.
Mike Daniel, owner of Ability Remodeling, earned his Master Certified Remodeler designation in 2017. Reflecting on what the achievement meant to him, he shared:
“After working extremely hard for many years at becoming highly proficient at residential remodeling, it is quite nice to be recognized for my dedication and expertise in the industry. MCR communicates this with three simple letters.”
- Mike Daniel, MCR
Mike has worked in the remodeling industry for 25 + years, and is the founder of Ability Remodeling in Prescott, AZ. He works alongside his son-in-law, Phil Stephens, in running the company. His son, Michael, is also a part of the team along with trusted carpenters, administration, and tradespeople. During the interview, Mike was asked about how important it is for homeowners to seek out contractors who have professional designations when hiring for their remodeling projects. Mike said, “When a homeowner is planning a significant remodeling project, it is very important for them to find someone with the knowledge, experience, and commitment to complete such a project successfully. Certified Remodelers have proven expertise in achieving just that.”
